NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATIONS

OLD ALGIERS MAIN STREET A 501(c)(3) organization following the guidelines established by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, this organization works to re-establish the historic commercial areas and properties within the communities comprising Old Algiers. ALGIERS HISTORICAL SOCIETY is devoted to researching the history of Algiers and its people as well as to preserve that history and pass it on through education in schools. All are invited to monthly lecture at 10 a.m., the 3rd Sat. of each month. Members receive a 16-page newsletter quarterly. Membership is $10 per year. ARTinA: Art in Algiers is a non-profit organization of local artists dedicated to promoting and advancing interest, education and participation in the visual and performing arts in the Algiers community. For more information, call Jessica Hack at (504) 366-0786.

ALGIERS ECONOMIC & DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION’s mission is to help the Algiers community grow and prosper by being a catalyst for economic development that provides for a vibrant business environment. Members become connected with business and community people via Monthly Luncheons and After Hour Business Mixers. The AEDF also offers ongoing education and business fairs for members.

CONFETTI KIDS is a grassroots nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the children of Algiers Point. Upon the completion of Confetti Park, Confetti Kids has refocused their efforts to foster a sense of community in bringing neighbors together as well as hosting child-centered programming and parades. FRIENDS OF THE ALGIERS COURTHOUSE is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to restore and assist in the maintenance of the Algiers Courthouse property and grounds for historical, educational and public use. The Romanesque-style building provides essential government services to Algiers and stands as a revered monument to the past of our beloved hometown. FRIENDS OF THE FERRY’s mission is to promote Greater New Orleans’ ferries as a form of reliable public transportation for commuters and tourists alike. FOF was incorporated as a 501( c ) 4 in 2006 to lobby to return the ferry hours to midnight after Hurricane Katrina. FOF’s long term goal is to help facilitate high-speed passenger ferries up and down the river. Visit the Web site for ferry schedules, river and bridge cams, parking information.

FRIENDS OF THE HUBBELL LIBRARY is an all volunteer organization to support Algiers Point’s local library branch in the form of money and volunteer labor. Billed as “the little library that could,” New Orleans' oldest public library -- a Carnegie library built in 1907 -- has been saved more than once by a tenacious Hubbell woman. First, Cita Dennis Hubbell, and then her daughter Amy, who picked up the torch after Hurricane Katrina.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH - Mike Rocks has done a great job developing and maintaining a positive relationship with the 4th District command, and attending the monthly APAC (Algiers Police Advisory Committee) meetings where he represents the Point’s best interest. Mike keeps abreast of crime and suspicious activity in the Point via input from the 4th Distinct and residents, and shares this information through timely emails.
